Host and Nectar Plants

We recommend the following HOST PLANTS to help bring the life cycle of the butterfly to your yard. We find these work especially well in the Albuquerque, New Mexico climate.

SWAN PLANT

Asclepias physocarpa
Host for monarch butterflies. Prefers moderate moisture, sandy well-drained soil and full sun. Annual.

SHOWY MILKWEED

Asclepias speciosa
Host for monarch butterflies. Prefers moist soil, almost full to full sun. Perrenial

WHORLED MILKWEED

Asclepias verticillata
Host for monarch butterflies.Prefers dry soil and full sun. Perennial.

BUTTERFLY WEED

Asclepias tuberosa
Host for monarch butterflies. Prefers dry soil, and full sun to part shade. Perennial.

TROPICAL MILKWEED

Asclepias curassavica
Host for monarch butterflies. Prefers well-drained soil, do not over water. Plant in part sun. Easy to propagate from seed. Annual.

FENNEL

Foeniculum vulgare
Host for black swallowtail butterflies. Prefers well-drained soil and full sun. Perennial.

PASSION VINE

Passiflora caerulea
Host for variegated fritillary and gulf fritillary butterflies. Extraordinary flowers! Prefers moist well-drained soil and full sun. Perennial.

HOLLYHOCK

Alcea
Host for painted lady butterflies. Prefers moist, rich soil and full sun. Short-lived perennial.

ASH

Fraxinus
Host for tiger swallowtail butterflies. Prefers wet soil but has slight drought tolerance. Plant in full sun. Great shade tree.

BEE BALM

Monarda spp.
Bee Balm blooms in early spring through summer.  Blooms attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.  Deadheading encourages more blooms.

ANISE HYSSOP

Asgastache foeniculum
A bee, hummingbird and butterfly magnet.  Likes part shade to full sun.  Perennial.

JUPITER'S BEARD

Centranthus ruber
Drought tolerant. Blooms late spring to early summer.  Particularly attractive to tiger swallowtail and other butterflies. Perennial.

BROWN EYED SUSAN

Rudbeckia hirta
Prefers moderate moisture, but drought tolerant.  Blooms late summer until hard frost. Likes part shade to full sun. Short lived perennial.

MARIGOLD

Plant in full sun. Blooms mid-spring to early frost. Annual.
